Side Winder Excavation Drum · 模型 267834
The Side Winder Excavation Drum design concept takes inspiration from Archimedes’ screw. The excavation device reduces the need of gravity to help with vertical excavation forces and instead combines with axial forces similar to those a screw would exert to excavate, leading to an optimized low gravity excavation device. Construction/Assembly: Material: Titanium Manufacturing Method: 3D printing Assembly: None, printed as end product Specifications: Width: 359mm Diameter: 450mm Maximum Scoop Engagement: 146mm Theoretical Fill Volume: 44 liters Actual Predicted Fill Volume: 25-30 liters Mass: 4.7kg Working Principles: When the bucket rotates, each helical tapered scoop is filled with material. When the scoop reaches the top of the rotation, the material is dropped into the drum. On the way back down, the intention is that the opening in the end of each scoop will not allow any material stored in the drum to escape before it reaches the excavation surface. This is achieved by optimizing the length of the helical tapered scoop (see “Next Steps” below). Unloading is completed by reversing the drum’s rotation which allows the material to escape through the same way it was excavated. Advantages: Unlike other lower scoop count designs which rely exclusively on vertical forces in a low gravity environment, this design has several excavating scoops that each utilize both vertical and horizontal forces. The scoops are also arranged so that equal numbers of scoops are engaged at any time. This means loads on the machine are nearly constant and multi-directional while magnitudes of these loads reduces. These features lead to components that are less likely to fail due to fatigue stresses encountered in a typical cyclical loading scenario seen in other designs. By arranging two drums adjacent to each other, horizontal excavation forces should cancel assuming the drums are rotating in opposing directions. The multi-scoop concept is designed for maximum redundancy by incorporating several scoops in case one more fails since repairs would be, let’s say, a bit difficult. Next Steps: Further analysis needs to be completed in order to find the optimal length of helical scoops used in the design. Too short and the material has a chance to escape during excavation and too long means less total scoops and more cyclical loading of machine elements. Fillets need to be added to the design to reduce stress concentrations and further structural analysis needs to be compl...
