The same can geometry and drop conditions were applied to three materials: aluminum, steel, and ABS plastic. The simulations measured peak von Mises stress and displacement to evaluate how each material absorbs impact energy. The goal was to determine which material provides the best drop resistance and lowest stress during impact. Title: Effect of Material Selection on Soda Can Impact Performance Objective: Determine how different materials affect stress and deformation during a soda can drop test. Hypothesis: A more flexible material will absorb more impact energy and experience lower peak stress. Materials Tested: Aluminum Steel ABS Plastic Methods: Modeled identical soda can geometry in SolidWorks. Applied the same drop height and impact surface. Ran drop test simulations for each material. Recorded peak stress and displacement. Test Data: Material Peak von Mises Stress (Pa) Max Displacement (mm) Performance Ranking Best Choice? ABS Plastic 1.23 × 10⁷ 0.1846 1st (lowest stress) Best Choice Aluminum 7.69 × 10⁷ ~0.18 2nd Acceptable Steel 2.18 × 10⁸ ~0.17 3rd (highest stress) Not Idea
