My name is Tomás Abrate, and I am a mechanical engineering student at the Universidad Nacional de Rosario in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. I am part of a team of four students, composed of: Augusto Bernaus Alejo Coronel Ivo Castellani Together, we are enrolled in the course M-25 Synthesis of Mechanisms and Machines, taught by Professor Marcelo Valderrey, with the support of Ruben Lupi and Alexis Bregant. They encouraged us to participate in NASA’s challenge, “Novel Recuperator Design for Cryogenic Fluid Management System,” (https://grabcad.com/library/spiderpigyroid-hx-1) and supported us throughout the design process. Our proposal, “SpiderPiGyroid,” is based on the implementation of triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) of the gyroid type, chosen for their excellent heat transfer potential and compatibility with additive manufacturing. The design maximizes the heat exchange surface area between the two fluids, minimizes pressure drop, and significantly reduces the overall mass of the system. It also offers potential cost savings in manufacturing compared to traditional designs. Furthermore, we utilized nTop software to optimize the geometry using scalar fields, enabling local adjustments in wall thickness to reinforce critical areas, improve thermal efficiency, and reduce pressure losses. If you require further information, please feel free to contact me through my profile. Update 26/05/25: This desing took the third place in the NASA Challenge. The award made us really proud , and of course, represent all the hard work. Link of results: https://grabcad.com/challenges/novel-recuperator-design-for-cryogenic-fluid-management-system/results
