The Berrylicious Bioreactor · 模型 57379
The Berrylicious Bioreactor is designed to be 3D printed, autoclavable, food-safe, leakproof, and meets all of the other design requirements for the NASA Design Challenge. It is comprised of 3 separately 3D-printed cylindrical compartments (~8.5 cm diameter) that can be stacked, assembled, autoclaved and prepared for use. It will be printed using filaments of polypropylene with 30% glass fibers (3DXTech, FibreX PP+GF30) so that it can be autoclaved or chemically (EtO) sterilized, and to ensure biocompatibility, food-grade compliance, and the ability to be used continuously over long durations (six months to a year) to provide fresh and nutritious berry cell smoothies. The chambers are sealed from each other using EPDM autoclavable O-rings. The bottom chamber (~36 mL) contains air to provide oxygen for the plant cells to grow which enters the plant cell growth chamber through a gas permeable membrane at the top of the bottom compartment, that provides a seal between the air chamber and the plant cell growth chamber. There is one port on the air chamber with a 0.22-micron filter to allow gas exchange with the environment at all times. The middle compartment (~50 mL) contains the growing plant cell aggregates that are suspended in liquid nutrient solution (sucrose, macronutrients, and micronutrients in water) sealed on the bottom with the gas permeable membrane and sealed on the top of the cell chamber with a ceramic microfiltration membrane (Sterlitech, 1.4 micron pore size, 47 mm diameter, food-safe). There are two ports on the cell chamber, an inlet port to connect to a syringe and an outlet port to collect a portion of the plant cell mass for consumption.
