What Is It? A Mechanical Iris (also called an Iris Diaphragm) is one of the most elegant mechanisms ever engineered. It's a device that creates a continuously variable circular opening and it can smoothly go from fully closed (tiny hole) to fully open (large hole) and back, using a set of overlapping curved blades that all move simultaneously with a single rotational input. The name comes from the human eye,Iris (the colored ring) does exactly the same thing, expanding and contracting the pupil based on light levels. Engineers essentially reverse-engineered biology.
