This coupler was developed from the Shibata-type tightlock coupler by modifying the positioning mechanism into a conical shape, and was originally used on Shinkansen trains in JAPAN. The pneumatic connection interface lacks a tappet valve, so after connecting the air pipes, a cock must still be separately opened for compressed air to flow. At the front end of the cars, there is only a central MR connector, whereas intermediate cars also feature an air pipe for the VCB and auxiliary air compressor.
