Ultimate Quadcopter Design for AM - version 4 · 模型 239202

作者:Christophe Blanc

Based on the first version, this is the most 'extreme' case taking advantage of the full advantages of AM design rules: No other manufacturing technology allows to work with such grid structures! A key consideration in this design is that a well-defined unit cell has been chosen to fill the model's core. Specifically I have worked with an elementary cell engineered to withstand bending (trade-off between tensile & compressive loads). This allows to remove "unnecessary" material that would for instance reduce twisting. Lattice design opens up a whole series of variables ultimately resulting in new 'digital' materials. Here we will focus on adjusting the model only by modifying the beam's diametre. Its beam length, unit cell and outer shell remains fixed. Thanks to the light-weight structure, the density of the "lattice design space" is 43% for an aspect ratio of 1:2 (diametre 0.7 mm & beam length 1.4 mm). Therefore the final mass is reduced from 32 g down to 14g! Of course such a complex pattern can only be printed with a soluble support material. And AM expertise with lattice structure! Each AM technology has its own limitations, and - similarly to drilling - it is easier to manufacture a 1 mm long hole of diametre 10 mm than a 10 mm long hole of diameter 1 mm. For FDM technology, it is safe to say that an aspect ratio of 1:2 can be achieved. Still the potential for further mass reduction is tremendous: 26% density (potentially ~ 8.5 g) for an aspect ratio of 1:3 (diametre 0.467 mm & beam length 1.4 mm); 17% density for an aspect ratio of 1:4 (diametre 0.35 mm & beam length 1.4 mm). PS: Please consider the file #2 for the challenge.
