A Universal Power Transmission Joint (U-joint) is a mechanical coupling that connects two rotating shafts which are not in line with each other. It allows power (torque and rotational motion) to be transmitted between shafts that may be at an angle, while still maintaining efficient rotation. This type of power transmission is normally seen in RWD vehicles. The universal joint is built from two forks (painted in teal) connected by a cross-shaped intermediate member (the “spider” or cross). Each fork is attached to one of the shafts, and the spider enables them to pivot relative to each other. This arrangement allows the shafts to rotate at an angle to one another, typically up to 45°, depending on the design. As the input shaft rotates, the fork transfers the motion to the spider. The spider pivots within the bearings and transmits the motion to the output fork. This motion is then transferred to the output shaft. The result is that torque and rotation are transmitted even when the shafts are misaligned. Normally the spider is manufactured as one single piece. Here, I have made a nut (red) that is open at all 6 edges and bolts (yellow) that mount on the forks and screw right into the nut to make a secure connection. While simple in construction, a single U-joint does not maintain constant angular velocity between the input and output shafts (the output shaft speeds up and slows down slightly during each revolution). applications of the U-joint include automotive industry, industrial machinery, agricultural equipment, aerospace and marine engineering.
