Hi, this is my model of the Van Staal VR125 aluminum power knob. If you want to machine custom knobs for your reel, this will give you an idea of hardware and sizing. One of the bushings in the original knob was not flanged (see drawing notes). I added a counterbore so 2 of the same bushings can be used. I also opted for a low profile nylon lock nut in place of the custom nut that was provided. It should resist backing out better (I'd still use loctite red). You can also use a socket with it rather than just an open face wrench. 2 types of bushings are included in the model and are available on McMaster. One is acetal and the other is oil-embedded bronze. The original bushings are plastic, probably acetal or PTFE. PTFE bushings are also available on McMaster, I just didn't see them when I put together the assembly. Part #s are in the file names. Shoulder bolt is 316 stainless. A second, smaller shoulder needs to be added on the threaded end with a lathe. Both spacer pieces are custom. I recommend using 316 stainless if you can, but I imagine aluminum or brass would work fine. They clamp down on the handle when the nut is tightened. Short of a CNC lathe, I don't know how you'd hollow out the middle. And it's definitely not worth machining anyways, given that they're only $45 online. The hardware and bushings alone will probably cost you $20. This is geared towards people that want to make something custom using the same mounting hardware & overall size.
