London Waterloo station. The biggest and busiest railway station in Britain. The mighty arches of the International Terminal span up to 48m at its widest point. The only thing supporting those arches is the ground below and between them. So what do you do if you need to dig up up that bit of ground? Hmm. - Tie the legs together? That's what they did. No mere string, but Ø38 steel cable doubled up across 5 grid lines. There's a bit of guff here - http://www.constructionmanagermagazine.com/onsite/steel-minds-gap-waterloo/ I didn't actually design this ('cos I like to sleep at night) I just modeled it up and did the shopping list/ fab. drawings. From the back of the hard drive and my brief days as a builders draffie which is not my favourite kind of work, I must say.
