3D-Printed Cap Tightening Head for R&D Tests · 模型 50216
This project presents a 3D-printed prototype cap tightening head designed for R&D and semi-manual packaging tests. The tool was developed for smooth cylindrical caps with an approximate diameter of 25 mm and height of 25 mm. The main purpose of the prototype was to create a simple auxiliary tool for testing the gripping concept, ergonomics and repeatability of cap tightening operations. Manufacturing All main custom components were manufactured using 3D printing from Markforged Onyx material. This allowed a fast transition from CAD model to physical prototype and made it possible to quickly verify the concept in practice. Drive interface A standard 1/4" hex drive bit, 1.5" long, was used as the drive interface. The bit was press-fitted into the Mounting Flange. This solution allows the head to be easily mounted in a cordless drill, electric screwdriver or pneumatic screwdriver. A pneumatic screwdriver can be especially useful during testing because it allows better control of the tightening torque. Assembly The Mounting Flange is attached to the Main Body using countersunk M3 screws. The holes in the printed Main Body were designed so that the M3 screws can form the thread directly in the nylon-based printed material. In this prototype, no threaded inserts or pre-tapped holes were required. Operating principle The Sliding Cone Assembly works as the main internal actuating element. The cone acts as a mechanical spreader for the arms. When axial force is applied, the cone moves inside the main body and spreads the arms, causing the jaws to grip the smooth cylindrical surface of the cap. The return of the jaws to their initial open position is supported by elastic return elements. In this prototype, an extension spring and an O-ring were used to help return the jaws after the tightening operation. Sliding cone assembly The Sliding Cone Assembly consists of a 3D-printed cone and a press-fitted machined polyamide plunger / sliding insert with a diameter of 14.5 mm. The polyamide insert was used to improve sliding behaviour inside the main body and reduce friction during operation. For a simplified prototype version, this insert can also be manufactured as a 3D-printed component. Cap gripping The gripping elements, named Jaws, were covered with glued polyurethane pads. The polyurethane layer improves friction between the jaws and the smooth cylindrical surface of the cap, helping to transmit torque without damaging the cap surface. Project scop
