Grabby Goes Gold - Golden Gear Awards 2015 · 模型 149410
What's better than having the infamous Grabby go for the gold...literally. This year's design features Grabby standing under a make-shift painting station in an effort to get as much gold as one can have. We grabbed several cans of gold and Grabby waited patiently as we colored him accordingly. I designed this trophy using Autodesk Inventor and tied each of the elements together to make a stronger structure. I maintained a material thickness based on the guidelines for 3D Printed sandstone. The STL was uploaded to various 3D printing providers to verify the model integrity and get an accurate price. This trophy stands approximately 4.5 inches tall and 3.6 inches wide. The cost for the trophy based on the measurements above is about $70. I played around with scaling the design and was easily able to go to 5 inches tall for around $93. Good luck to everyone that is participating in this competition. And, many thanks to those individuals that will be awarded the Golden Gear Award for 2015. I've learned from my previous win of this competition that Gold can come out looking like more of a dull mustard color. I went with yellow, which in the renderings looks rather bright, but will be more subdued when 3D printed in color sandstone. A few tips - sandstone is fragile. I went with thicker elements throughout the design and exceeded the minimum thickness for nearly all of the features. Also, make sure and design Grabby's antennae thicker than how it looks in the GrabCAD cartoon picture. I ran into issues with my 2013 winning design and was asked to make it much thicker to enable a more successful print. Last thing - I found that embossing text as a cut operation will come out looking blurry when 3D printed. My one complaint about Autodesk Inventor is exporting a 3D printable format in color. My workflow was to export the model from Inventor to 3D Max and then saving out to a DAE (Callada) format. If anyone has a better workflow from directly in Inventor (without investing in a converter add-in), I am all ears! The requirements are requesting the native CAD format. I will upload the Inventor model after the competition ends. Additional Notes: When uploading to Sculpteo, I had to import the ZIP file containing the OBJ and color information. After the import, the units defaulted to cm and covert correctly. It will read 11.46 cm, which is approximately 4.5 Inches.
