Deacon Poole. Grand Haven High School, Grand Haven, Michigan Instructor: Jeremy Case Walking on or over ice has always been an issue for any and everyone living in countries that have to deal with snow and cold winters. Over 42,000 work-place injuries were reported to be caused by ice, sleet, and/or snowy conditions in 2014. The “Ice-Grip” shoe attachment is designed to solve that issue. Ice-Grip is a slip on addition made to fit almost any form of shoe or boot. The basic design of the Ice-Grip features 5 “Studs” placed along the sole of the shoe or boot, and are all held together by a Nylon Cordura band that connects each stud to each other and then connects the studs to a central “Tab” on the bridge of the shoe. This tab is designed to be used for tightening and loosening purposes. Each stud has grooves modeled into the bottom of them. The Ice-Grip is designed to be a sturdy, reliable, reusable, and affordable, whilst also featuring a higher level of safety than most other ice shoe attachments which feature sharp, metal points and/or blades. The studs and the tab will both be 3D printed through FDM Printing by the Stratasys’ dimension sst-768 3D Printer, with Polycarbonate plastic to be safer and cheaper than it’s metal-grip counterparts. Polycarbonate plastic was chosen as the material for this design as it features high impact resistance which is a must-have for the Ice-Grip to be used by any and all body types, and not crack or shatter under a smaller weight load.
