Knuckleball Ejection Mechanism · 模型 57213
The Knuckleball Ejection Mechanism (KEM) is a spring-loaded capsule deployment system developed for the NASA SPEED competition. Inspired by the baseball pitch that leaves the hand with zero spin and disturbance, the KEM is designed to release capsules cleanly with minimal angular perturbation. Built from two aluminum plates, off-the-shelf linear motion components, and custom 3D-printed parts, the prototype demonstrated a measured ejection velocity of 4.94 m/s with a 0.425 kg capsule. These results confirm reliable performance using simple, low-cost manufacturing methods. The system is loaded using a reusable 8 mm lead screw tool and secured by a cord that is cut at launch with a nichrome wire release mechanism—robust even in high-altitude conditions. Capsule support is provided by print-in-place latches which clear the path during release to avoid unwanted friction. Prototyping was completed with consumer-grade 3D printers and CNC machining to demonstrate manufacturability. Watch the video below or explore the attached PDF for a full breakdown of the design, subsystem details, and test footage.
