The proposed bioreactor features an efficient hemispherical-shaped culture chamber with a total internal volume of 186 mL, allocated as 100 mL for culture growth and 86 mL for headspace to facilitate gas exchange. The hemispherical shape optimizes fluid dynamics, nutrient distribution, and gas exchange, while minimizing dead zones to ensure uniform culture growth. To maintain aerobic conditions, the system includes a 25 mm diameter gas exchange port with a PTFE membrane, which enables efficient oxygen intake and CO₂ removal while also ensuring a watertight seal. Additionally, PTFE seal tape is used for enhanced watertight sealing, further improving leak prevention. Instead of a traditional thread-based closure, which is generally less effective for leak-proof sealing when 3D printed, the bioreactor features a press-fit closure, ensuring a secure and reliable seal without the risk of leakage. The bioreactor is reusable and modular, specifically designed to meet NASA's stringent space mission requirements for food production. It is also compatible with Luer lock connectors and a valve for controlled medium intake, allowing precise and contamination-free nutrient exchange. Only the culture chamber and its cover require cleaning, recycling, or 3D printing for maintenance and reuse.
