But if desired the cable system can be reversed to make it "voluntary opening." For the prototype I used paracord and shock-cord as the tensioning cables and springs, respectively. This is a bulky method, but the fingers are so light it could easily be achieved with something akin to rubber bands and fishing line. The throw of the cables is approximately 1.5-2 inches. The prosthetic attachment bolt must be placed inside of the print half-way through a build. This encases the bolt securely inside of the palm. All three Fingers have one point of rotation. This reduces the chance of flaws in a print and improves the overall durability of the hand. For gripping smooth objects the hand does need some kind of rubber sheathing. If simply holding an item like a soda can, the pinky finger can be positioned to take the weight while the other two prevent lateral motion. Where the middle fingers of a normal hand would be there is a hook, which allows for carrying of items such as bags with little effort and serves as the opposing digit to the thumb for grasping items that require a "pinch" motion. The hand may also hold a writing implement either using just the thumb or all fingers. Each finger could be actuated independently, but since in a terminal device there is only a single actuation cable all fingers would be positioned and then secured. Then they will start and begin at the given location. In order to maintain some level of compliance in the hands I would recommend using as strong elastic as the interface to the actuation cable. This will maintain grip strength by prevent crushing or jamming of the entire system.
